Boggles the mind doesn’t it that I can take time out of my
day to write about something so….trivial.
For something so trivial, it sure is available in so many different
ways (I won’t even mention the money side). Think about it, you can get it in
candy bars, brownies, cookies, pies, ice cream…..I think you get the picture.
In my family, for some of us, every birthday we have a
chocolate cake with peanut butter frosting! (Cheers to my Mom the great cook!)
And when I say every birthday, I mean every birthday. I have been having this
same dessert since I was a teenager (no age comments please!). Seriously! Now
you might be thinking….”Hey girl, change it up!”, to which I’d reply….”Why?” Now
I could go to the old phrase, if it ain’t broke don’t fix it for my reasoning,
but I think I can do better. Why….because that’s what I want for my day. Simple
as that.
On that one day a year when it’s our birthday, it’s ok for
it to be about you. It’s great to get sincerely birthday wishes, hugs, and the
dessert of choice. (And let’s not forget presents!) It’s your day after all. But!
Don’t let it carry over to every day.
Take a look around. Society is full of greed, selfishness,
pride and envy. It’s not pretty. It’s keeping up with who has the nicest car,
the biggest house, makes the most money, has more fame…..where does it end. If
you dig and claw your way to the “top”, when you look back down, all you will
see are the lives in ruin you left behind. The pain on the faces of those who
once loved and respected you and now pity you. The grave markers of those who
have passed that you couldn’t take time for.
True happiness, true success is measured by the lives you
touch not destroy.
